FUN STUFF & APRIL FIRST STORIES

     These are the true published articles that I ran in several national newspapers in Panama. The last story about a runaway tunnel boring machine basically got me fired, as the editor ran it in Spanish as well as English, and the Panamanians do not have the concept of silly spoof April Fool's stories. A year after this story was run, the boring machine that I photographed for my mock-up picture did in fact get stuck in a tunnel near Volcan- it is still, to my knowledge, stuck there to this day.

     Strangely, my first story, published in the VISITANTE/VISITOR newspaper, mentioned a Panamanian bobsled team. At the time that was a joke, however, the following year- sure enough Panama had a bobsled team. I did not get credit for that.

     The canal-widening-being-unnecessary story did eventually get published, however, global warming, which I joked about in the story, has given the canal many problems, as the river that supplies water to the Panama Canal is drying up, so the exact opposite of the spoof story.

The BASURAMA floating island of garbage, has actually been discussed as a possibility. So many a true word has been spoken in jest indeed.
